Remembering Marco
John Doe was born in Pasadena in the summer of 1946, the second of four
children, and lived nearly all of his eighty years within a few miles of where he started.
He met Margaret at a friend’s birthday party in 1969 and told his brother that night
that he intended to marry her. They were together for fifty-four years.
He spent thirty-one years as a machinist, and he was the kind of man people called when
something was broken — a carburetor, a screen door, a difficult afternoon. He was
unhurried and hard to rattle. He kept a notebook of every car he ever owned, with the
mileage at which he sold it. He was a poor singer and sang constantly.
John Doe is survived by his wife Margaret, his daughters Claire and Susan, six
grandchildren, and a great many people who thought of him as their own. He would have been
embarrassed by a page like this, and pleased that you came.
